LinkedIn has released their DirectAds product which allows advertisers to target the LinkedIn audience in the US (for now) directly. LinkedIn claims 12 million or so targetable US users, though we’re not sure it actually says what the “activity window” for these users is. A week, a month, 45 days? We may have missed it.
If […]

The Social Media Gender Gap
May 21st, 2008 · No Comments
The IAB email this morning caught my eye because it referenced a BusinessWeek article that mentions a study done by Rapleaf (a company that aggregates social network information and has come under fire for some of its marketing tactics), saying (my emphasis added) “Rapleaf CEO Auren Hoffman, citing a recent study by her firm, […]

CPM Rates falling, according to PubMatic
May 14th, 2008 · No Comments
Pubmatic’s price index shows that overall eCPM pricing for display inventory is down, according to their figures. This accords with the word around the industry that several advertisers were cutting back in April, fearing recession. It spells opportunity for certain direct ad buyers, I’m sure — if the numbers are still backing out and the […]

When Looking for Mail Order Brides…
April 30th, 2008 · 2 Comments
At the risk of attracting even more comment spam, I audaciously submit the above headline for this blog post. I had to chuckle when I read the latest press release/data bite from my former employer, Nielsen Online (the measurement company formerly known as Nielsen//NetRatings with two /’s) on ClickZ.
There follows a somewhat dubious trail of […]

NexTag - a top 30 site (if you count ads too…)
April 6th, 2008 · No Comments
I noticed that NexTag is a top 30 ranked site according to Quantcast… the only problem is that when you look at the detail, and the large spike in traffic that NexTag has recently experienced, most of the spike is explained by them buying (and serving) more ads through their adq.nextag.com domain. I should know, […]

comScore’s Missing Data: OpinionSquare, RelevantKnowledge
February 3rd, 2008 · No Comments
This is a long post. But it ends with some interesting data. I recently read Ben Edelman’s piece about the Sears-comScore debacle, where Sears (”Sears Holdings Community”) was partnering with comScore to track users’ online activities, encouraging an install in a way that many users might find to be deceptive. Ben is a well-known industry […]

Comparison Shopping Brand Recognition
November 24th, 2007 · No Comments
Google Trends is a free and easy way to benchmark how often consumers are searching for a website by name, to get an idea of a site’s relative brand pull instead of its power at buying product keyword terms (in the case of comparison shopping sites).
Comparing searches for the terms “nextag”, “pricegrabber” and “shopzilla” yields […]

Google + Nielsen = TV Measurement Nirvana?
October 24th, 2007 · No Comments
These two make somewhat of an incongruous couple…. according to the NY Times, Nielsen and Google are partnering on TV ad effectiveness data gleaned from set-top boxes. This amidst questions about whether we even need Nielsen’s data anymore (37000 households by 2011, not as many now) when players like Tivo are providing a lot more […]

Low Rate Source Spend Even Lower than Nielsen
October 17th, 2007 · 1 Comment
Silicon Valley Insider references the latest Nielsen ad spending figures. We haven’t had a chance to drill deeply into this month’s numbers, but from what we know about the ads that are making up those numbers, we’re even more convinced that that the NetRatings figures are very overstated with respect to Yahoo!, felt here in […]

IAB/PwC Report Again - Methodology Hazy
October 5th, 2007 · No Comments
The quarterly IAB / PriceWaterhouseCoopers advertising revenue report is out again and as usual, it’s a bit short on specifics as to how the numbers were collected (namely what percentage of the numbers are actual vs. estimated/pulled out of the air). NetRatings did a lot to adjust it’s Adrelevance figures based on public filings and […]
